Decades since the introduction of genetically modified crops, they continue to be rejected by farmers and consumers alike. Yet, backed by philanthro capitalist-funded ‘research’ institutions, a few corporations who dominate the seed and agrochemical industry persist in selling these hazardous technologies. Often, in the guise of addressing malnutrition or the climate crisis.

This study session via webinar aims to facilitate learning from the experiences of peasant movements and advocacy groups in their campaigns against GMOs in food and agriculture. The session will focus on understanding grassroots strategies, with particular emphasis on the successful Philippine experience in halting the commercialization of GM Golden Rice.

Speakers will share their knowledge, tactics, and lessons learned in rejecting GMOs on their fields and plates. To inform future strategies, there will also be input on gene-edited crops, considered as the second wave of biotech crops that are increasingly being adopted worldwide despite lack of adequate regulation. An open forum will also take place to give participants the space to share their efforts, best practices, and challenges in campaigning against GMOs.

This webinar is designed as a collaborative learning space, encouraging participants to engage with speakers, ask questions, and discuss how these experiences can inform and strengthen their own local, regional or global efforts. By examining diverse approaches from different contexts, participants will gain valuable insights into protecting health, livelihoods and biodiversity against GMO harms; and advancing people’s food sovereignty.
